about

GRAMMY-nominated, South London trio PVA return with the announcement of a new single titled “Untethered”.

The new single sees the band expanding on the insistent and propulsive sound laid down on their widely acclaimed debut 2020 EP “Toner”. Produced and mixed by the band, the unrelenting and energetic new single sees the trio once again combining the release of the dancefloor with jagged punk spirit. Built on a bed of dynamic industrial beats, blistering synths and sprechgesang inflected post-punk, “Untethered” is a freeing and powerful statement of intent from the band as they continue their musical evolution.

Speaking on the single, the band says, "Untethered is a song about release. It’s our current set opener and an introduction to our industrial arm. We wrote it in one session in a burst of chaotic catharsis. The lyrics follow a character being freed from imaginary tethers and experiencing the earth under their feet again."

The single is also accompanied by a new video which perfectly reflects the themes of the track. Directed by the band, the video sees them performing under a pulsating lighting rig with angular and sparse visuals (created by Gabriel Davidson) projected onto the trio as Ella Harris dances unrestrained.

In addition to the new single, PVA have also announced details of a new London headline show to take place at Corsica Studios on 9th July. Tickets will only be available on pre-sale via the PVA mailing list until 11am on Friday, which people can sign up to via PVA.band.

Following live dates throughout the last year supporting the likes of Shame, Dry Cleaning, and Goat Girl, and incendiary showcases across SXSW in 2021 and The Great Escape this year, PVA will be playing a number of festival dates this summer including Wide Awake Festival this weekend.

PVA started out as a product of south London’s fervent indie scene alongside Squid, black midi and Black Country, New Road, and Shame. Even in their earliest iterations, however, their existence beyond the confines of a traditional band set-up were clear. It wasn’t unusual to be able to catch them twice in one night, once at Brixton sweatbox The Windmill and again in the early hours at Deptford’s subterranean Bunker club.

The group released their debut single ‘Divine Intervention’ through Speedy Wunderground in late 2019 with debut EP ‘Toner’ arrived a year later via Ninja Tune (home to similarly iconoclastic acts such as Young Fathers, Black Country, New Road, Bicep, Floating Points, and more). The EP featured a remix of ‘Talks’ from Mura Masa that picked up a GRAMMY nomination in the category of Best Remixed Recording at the 2022 ceremony, as well as also having further remixes of the track from Gilla Band, Lynks and members of black midi and Squid, whilst PVA themselves remixed tracks by friends Goat Girl and Shame.

These early releases earned widespread critical acclaim from media and fans alike for the band’s ability to combine the beating pulse of electronic music with the raw energy of a life-affirming gig. Produced by the mercurial Dan Carey (black midi, Bat For Lashes, Fontaines D.C.), the follow up EP “Toner” saw the trio earn plaudits across a wide-range of press and radio including placements in multiple end of year lists such as: the NME 100 list, DIY’s Class of 2021, Dork’s 2021 Hype List and Fred Perry’s One’s To Watch 2021, as well as The Guardian, NME, The Times, Evening Standard, The Telegraph, Clash, DIY, The Quietus, Dazed, and Dork who gave the EP a 5* review.

As the band heads into the festival season, and with more new music and live dates on the horizon, “Untethered” is a timely reminder of the band’s ability to warp and flex the limits of their sound as much in the studio as they do on stage. The new single is purpose built to ricochet off the walls of any major venue yet PVA are able to contain and toy with that same unbridled power on record, allowing for a mesmerising first taste of what is sure to be an incredibly exciting year for the trio.
